This is a photo I took of my (paternal) Grandparents on the front steps of their house at Ettalong Beach. It was a place where all of the grandchildren had enjoyable times when there on holidays -it was a 1 block walk to the beach, and an easy walk along the beach to Ettalong. The beach was protected, being in Brisbane Waters, and was very safe for youngsters. We used to hire canoes (based on the American Indian type of canoe) for 6pence/ hour (5 cents) and have a glorious time, catch whitebait and just swim and enjoy ourselves as only children can.

How incredible! Imagine being able to do all of that for 6p! And your grandparents look like mighty fine people Robert - you grandfather wears a hat nearly the same as my Grandpa :-)
Isnt it great to have a childhood place... I remember those old canoes. big chunky things ... nI wonder the things Josef and elle will look back at and say, it was only 10cents...lol..
I wonder what your gran was looking at?
was never sure what my grandmother was looking at - but it was always a goldmine eventually - had the ability to be strict and restraining, but loosen the tethers when appropriate
Thanks for posting this image, I was in Australia, Adelaide area in 1979-80. I loved the history and the people. Great historic buildings and churches!
Great post! It always amazes me when I think back, and listen to others talk of how much things cost "back then", compared to now.
